  • Night time

Contextual Points:

  • History, Crime, Action, Comedy

Equipment List (Cinematography/Noir related) - Reasoning:

- LED Lights (2/3x) - Simple focused lighting, initially going to use this as an attempt of creating soft light on characters faces, provide a certain appeal and atmospheric feeling relating to a noir convention.

- Halogen Light - Essential when creating shots with shadows, e.g. A door shot focusing on the shadow on the floor rather than the character at the door. Very common noir convention, especially when focusing on a cinematic noir.

- Slider - Not exactly a common convention regarding dynamic shots in a Film Noir but since we're going for a cinematic masterpiece style film, this is essential for appealing shots.

ORIGINAL PLOT/TREATMENT:

FRANK MARTINS a young cop that has just graduated from the Police Academy gets manipulated by his boss - Police Chief  (LLOYD WITMER) to kill 3 high ranking figures. (REX COUSINS, MICHAEL DONELLY, DIX TRACY) He succesfully kills them all but on his final victim, he meets a femme fatale (Rex Cousins wife - DEBBIE COUSINS) that makes him question himself and his mind but doesn't know that she is setting him up for jailtime. He realises after he picks up several hints and one piece of overwhelming evidence - a picture with her, Rex and Witmer. - He kills her in his anger.

PROBLEM:

- Explain manipulation of Martins

- Why were these men wanted dead? -  Connection with Witmer?

- No motive for any of the heavy-consequencial actions

NEW PLOT/TREATMENT:

FRANK MARTINS a young cop has just graduated from the Police Academy. He meets with LLOYD WITMER his Police Chief/Boss to officialize his position on the force. Lloyd has given Frank a mission to end the lives of 3 respected high ranking officals (REX COUSINS, DIX TRACY, MICHAEL DONELLY) - he persuades Frank using his position and almost acting as a fatherly figure towards Frank to get him on his side. On his way to assassinate his victims, a femme fatale - DEBBIE COUSINS stops him and tells him Witmer is plotting against him - she knows this as she is his wife. Martins goes back to Witmer and assassinates him only to realise that Debbie has played him double as she resides with one of the intended victims (MICHAEL DONELLY) - Frank then gets sent to jail.

SOLUTION:

- Explained the situation regarding a motive for Frank to do it - Lloyd passively persuades him (Fatherly figure - Inspiration: Star Wars - Anakin Skywalker and Palpatine)

- Focus on the femme fatale as a main character with a double persona.

- Established a connection between the victims, femme fatale and Witmer - Perhaps he knew about Donelly

EDITING STYLE

Coventions that will be used:

- Match Cuts

- Telling the story in FLASHBACKS - This is due to the story being presented in a non-linear fashion at the beginning.

- Shot during the day/evening - night filters will be used

- General = Continuity Editing/Occasional Montage is needed: Perhaps killing scenes

- Zooming out of a camera scene - added effect (revelation)

Since this is a going to be a Film Noir the use of editing effects will be reduced to minimal as this film will be taken at a realistic approach.

SOUND

Conventional Sounds/Techniques to be used:

- Typical Jazz Tune/Blues = Represents the Noir genre very well and provides a certain emotion towards a scene/location

- Diegetic Sounds: Heavy Breathing: Very useless in providing tension/suspense in an action/stealth scene

- The use of quiet/silence: Another powerful sound aspect; typical for Noir

- Discordant Music: Promote a pessimistic feeling.

- Sudden Noises/Sounds/Sharp Music: Scare Factor

- Definite Voice Over of the protagonist: Useful for narrating past large or imporant scenes/plot of the story.

- Diegetic Sound: The City; Ambience - Provides more depth for the viewer(s)
